Alpha-linolenic acid: a gift from the land?
نویسنده
چکیده
Although the fish-derived, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) may be considered “gifts from the sea” for cardiovascular health, the role of the land (or plant) -based n-3 FA -linolenic acid (ALA) has been less clear. ALA is the 18-carbon, 3-double bond (C18:3n-3) precursor to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; C20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; C22:6n-3), the latter 2 being the predominant n-3 FA in fish oils. ALA is found in certain plant oils, most notably flaxseed oil (where it constitutes 50% of total FA) and in canola oil ( 9%), unhydrogenated soybean (salad dressing) oil ( 7%), hydrogenated soybean oil ( 3%), and olive oil ( 1%). According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III data, consumption in the United States currently averages 1.3 g/d.

Modification of plant lipids for human health: development of functional land-based omega-3 fatty acids.
We have remodeled canola seeds to accumulate the omega-3 fatty acid, stearidonic acid (SDA). In doing so, we have demonstrated the feasibility of developing a land-based source of functional omega-3 fatty acids on a large scale. Land-based omega-3 fatty acids represent a sustainable source of omega-3 fatty acids that can be produced on large acreages and delivered to consumers in a wide variety...

Objective(s): The effects of alpha linolenic acid (ALA) on tracheal responsiveness (TR), total protein (TP), phospholipase A2 (PLA2), immunoglobulin E (IgE), interleukin 4 (IL-4), interferon gamma (INF-γ) level and INF-γ/IL4 ratio in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of sensitized rats were examined.Materials and Methods: TR to methacholine and ovalbumin (OA), BALF levels of TP, PLA2 and IgE ...
متن کاملEffects of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from plant and marine origin on platelet aggregation in healthy elderly subjects.
In the present intervention study we compared the effects of alpha-linolenic acid with those of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on platelet aggregation in vitro and ex vivo in healthy non-institutionalized elderly subjects. We also compared the effects of alpha-linolenic acid on platelet aggregation in elderly subjects with those in younger volunteers. During a run-in...
متن کاملAlpha-linolenic acid metabolism in men and women: nutritional and biological implications.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review critically evaluates current knowledge of alpha-linolenic acid metabolism in adult humans based on the findings of studies using stable isotope tracers and on increased dietary alpha-linolenic acid intake. The relative roles of alpha-linolenic acid and of longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell structure and function are discussed together with an overview...
متن کاملEffects of diet and simvastatin on fatty acid composition in hypercholesterolemic men: a randomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVE To explore the separate and combined effects of simvastatin and a low-saturated diet rich in alpha-linolenic acid on serum fatty acids. METHODS AND RESULTS 120 hypercholesterolemic men were randomly allocated to a habitual diet or dietary treatment group and to receive, in random order, simvastatin 20 mg/d or placebo, each for 12 weeks, in a double-blind manner. Dietary treatment de...
